4 postings about one topic, wow, it's really long! Isn’t it?
Today will be the last day of MIYC.

The last topic is the '10km in their shoes'!!!

What's the purpose of the 10km? Why MIYC prepare 10km?

Actually, this 10km event is not the first 10km event. Last April we also had 10km event in all branches. You can follow this YouTube and can watch the 10km of Gwangju MANNAM.

On that day, not only Gwangju but also other 12 branches had 10km events at the same time.

Then, why the 10km event was made and what is the aim of the 10km event?

 10km in their shoes was an awareness campaign. Holding the flags of the damaged countries (by war), people shouted the end of the war and world peace out. Through walking, participants were aware of the crises that the world faces now. The crises can be the war, climate change, disaster and dictatorship. (Especially this 10km event was made to oppose to the war.) It was a soundless movement toward the world. All participants walked wishing to show their strong supports to the anti-war movement and those who suffer from the ongoing war. 10km in their shoes was the starting point of MIYC. Through 10km event, MIYC began to act as a representative of many youth organizations working for world peace. It was a great step forward visible world peace.

 'Is it possible to achieve world peace just by walking 10km?' People may think like this. However, if you think about the history again then you can find that all the victories of freedom were made through the revolution. Long time ago, people had to bleed during the revolution, but now people don't need to bleed (ok, I admit nowadays also people sometimes (or often) bleed for the freedom). Thanks to the development of media thing, we can easily share our hopes and thoughts with the people who have the same thoughts with us. In this case, people can gather through Internet (or SNS') and can move together even though they are apart from each other. Nowadays, it is possible to go revolution without blood.

 10km event does not end as one day event. I don’t know the exact day but I heard that soon, 10km events will be held in all over the world. It started from one small country, Korea, but it will spread to the world. One candle can find another candle in the darkness. I think 10km event in Korea is the first lighted candle. And the light of the first candle spreads to the other ‘hidden’ candles. One light looks very small and people may be able to recognize it, but if the lights are put together, people can’t ignore it. It is the characteristic of the light. I think all the movements for world peace are like the candle.

 

It is the badge of MIYC.

We can get this badge after finishing the 10km (3km for us:P).

 Don’t ignore the one weak candle.

 It can burn the entire world.

Last two posts were about my personal experience with MIYC 10 km. Today, I will post about the MIYC itself. What it is and what is the purpose of MIYC !

What is MIYC?

MIYC is the acronym of MANNAM International Youth Coalition. 

MIYC site says that
  "MIYC was formed from groups of young people coming together with the vision and determination to unite people across borders, cultures, languages and races. MIYC aims to foster a spirit of appreciation and respect for the diversity of humanity, as well as for all individuals that create that diversity."

What is the aim of MIYC?

 MIYC will organize some projects throughout the year and organizations that decided to join the movement of MIYC will engage in those projects. For those projects, there will be a youth summits and summit's aim is to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing us in the pursuit of peace. Nobody wants war/fight. Everybody wants peace. Then why the peace couldn't be obtained until now? Because we coulnd't bring our power together. MIYC's role is to combine people's power into one way. One by one, all youth organization will join the movement of MIYC and MIYC will become more powerful. Each of us is very small, but if we put together, we can be a big power.

In my humble opinion, MIYC is a very ideal coalition. MIYC is not just a group, it is a 'coalition'. You may know the clear meaning of coalition. A coalition is 'a group consisting of people from different political or social groups who are co-operating to achieve a particular aim. MIYC was made only to cooperate with each other aiming to world peace. That's all. Nobody can say that it is for specific one group. It can not be like that MIYC is just a good way to gather together in the name of world peace. I hope MIYC spread more further than now and through MIYC world peace would be made.

Today's topic: MIYC, Pledge of Peace, 10 km in their shoes (1)

 Last Sunday, I went to Seoul with Gwangju MANNAM members. For what? To participate in the big peace event named 'Pledge of Peace, 10km in their shoes'. This event was hosted by MIYC (MANNAM International Youth Coalition). Many youth groups who are wishing for 'peace' gathered together in Seoul Grand Park and had a meaningful time. Participants were supposed to walk 10 km, but because we are from Gwangju (it takes about 4 hours to go to Seoul from Gwangju ;<) we walked only 3 km. The weather was so good and cherry blossoms were in full bloom. It was really good to walk while thinking the world peace.

 In Seoul Grand Park, there were many many people (foreigners and Korean), and I was happy that it means many people are thinking about the peace. When I heard this event, I doubted that how many people are thinking about the world peace and come to the event? However it turned out that many people are thinking about the world peace and try to do something for the world peace. It made me really really happy.

 Many people think that 'peace' is difficult thing. The friends who went to Seoul with me also thought that 'peace' is a difficult concept. It is because they never thought about the peace before. Same with me, before joining MANNAM, I also thought that world peace is a good but vague thing. (Thanks MANNAM!) For me, I think that this event was really meaningful in making people think about the 'peace' in light concept.

  Actually, it is not pleasing to find famous sayings about the war because it means that there have been many wars. Many people want the peaceful world without war. However many people think that it is impossible to stop war. Many people have been talking about the horrors of war but they did nothing to stop the war. I understand that it is very difficult to do something for the anti-war because they think that it needs really big thing. But actually it is not. Anti-war movement is not that difficult. Just start doing twitter and face book. Join the club and tweets about your sincere mind about anti-war. That is the first step forward world peace. I started my first step by joining MANNAM. Second step is twitter and third step is face book. For me it is also difficult and a little bit awkward because I’ve never done this before. I tried to change myself.

  As the situation (in Korea) is gettting worse, people started to focus on the reaction of the UN.
Many people would know about the UN for several ways. Today, I want to talk about the head of the UN, Ban Ki-moon.


BAN KI MOON

  Ban Ki-moon is the 8^th and current Secretary General of United Nations. He was born in a small farming village in South Korea, in June 1944. When he was in high school, he won essay contest sponsored by the Red Cross, and he’s got a chance to go to America and met U.S. President John F. Kennedy. That meeting made him to decide to become a diplomat. He entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1970 and become the foreign minister in 2004. And finally in 2006 he was elected as a 8^th Secretary General of UN. His main works are in climate change, nuclear nonproliferation, 8 Millennium Development goals. He is not that active politic person like Kofi Annan. But he was evaluated that he dealt with sensitive issues well among strong countries. Naturally, he was reelected as a UN Secretary General.

(When I was young, my dream was to become the first Korean UN Secretary General. But when I was middle school student, he (Ban Ki-moon) became the first Korean UN Secretary General, and I had to give up my dream. ;’( )

Anyway, I’m very proud of him as a Korean. Of course there are some points that he is criticized at but in my opinion, he is doing very well. As the world becomes smaller, there are more and more complicated and sensitive problems among the countries. People need specific organization to deal with those problems and UN is made. The lists that UN has to deal with are really long these days. From the war prevention to nature disaster prevention, every world is connected with each other complicatedly and naturally the role of UN as an intermediary is getting bigger. UN is an international organization and many people followed the direction of UN.

The thing that I hope is that MANNAM becomes like the UN. Concerning about peace, I hope MANNAM becomes the most effective association because MANNAM is non political association. Purely, MANNAM acts for the world peace. It is not related any profit of specific country.

I hope many people are interested in world peace without any cost. The cost of world peace is world peace itself. Don’t you think soJ?

It is really easy to be friends.
But sometimes, and for some people, it maybe the most difficult thing to do.

In this song, 'Why' is repeated again and again.
We can not understand why the world is full of these terrible things and why we can't change this world and just accept it.

Keep in mind the word 'why'.
It makes you awake to this illogical situation.
First we have to wake our minds and then we can wake our bodies.
You alone will be difficult, but with MANNAM, it will be much easier.
Because MANNAM people are highly enlightened about the illogical situation or the world.
MANNAM is the world peace leading group of the world.  


If everybody comes to think about 'why',
then the world will be changed without doubt.

Picnic Day of MANNAM Korean Class!


 For few days, the weather was so nice. So we MANNAM Gwangju Korean Class decided to go on a picnic. Our office is located in near Gwangju River so we decided to make 김밥 (Gimbap) in the office and go out to Gwangju River.

 On Saturday, we gathered in the office. One by one other students (and teachers) began to arrive and we started making Gimbap. Gimbap is a popular Korean food usually eaten during picnics. To make Gimbap, we need many contents. First, Gim and rice. (Because it is Gim(Gim) Bap(Rice).) And you can add radish, egg, ham,  cucumber, spinach, burdock and so on. There are many kinds of Gimbap. Because the contents are various. We made tuna Gimbap, nude Gimbap, basic Gimbap.

 It was really interesting to make Gimbap. Many friends also liked it. We really concentrated on making Gimbap. We even didn't talk to each other. hahaha

 As time goes by, late friends came and we made more and more gimbap. Some of them bring their traditional foods. Our Gimbap buffet became international buffet. :D

 But,,, sadly, the weather was not good. It was too windy, and even, rainy. So we had to stay in office. Instead going outside, we played games but it was good!

 

 

 It was really nice to be with students. MANNAM Gwangju Korean Class has been preparing some other activities besides Korean studying. Because through Korean foreign friends can learn Korea, but there are many other ways to learn Korea. So in national holiday, we do some special activities. For example, in Seollal(Lunar New Years Day), we made fortune bag, wore hanbok and learned how to bow. I think it is a good oppotunity for foreign students to experience real Korea. I hope many friends come and enjoy it!

MANNAM NEWS _ Nuclear threats

Today's topic : Nuclear threats

  All around us, I mean, South Korea, many countries feel sorry for this situation concerning about North Korea. North Korea has been threatened South Korea with their nuclear weapon, and last Tuesday, they announced that they will restart their nuclear reactor which had shut 5 years ago. Many major broadcasters are broadcasting about the nuclear problem between South and North Korea. However, South Korean looks like they have no idea about that.

  Everyone around me (including me), doesn’t care about the war. They even look like they don’t realize the situation. (Actually, some of my friends didn’t know about the situation that we face.) People around me (of course including me) don’t think that it will happen. I think there are two reasons about that situation. First, it is because we know that the entire world will react severely if North Korea does any action about the war. People say that if the war happens in Korea, it will be a Third World War. If the South Korea represents the democracy, then the North Korea would represent the socialism. The world is separated into two big parts democracy and socialism. People worry about the possibility of World War Ⅲ. Because Korean doesn’t think that the World War Ⅲ will happen, so people don’t care about this situation.

  Second, it is because we are accustomed to it. We are used to it. I mean, it is not the first time that North Korea threatens the South Korea (the world). They attacked North Korea before whether big or small. So, people (South Korean) think that it is a part of that. However, some people are saying that it is the North Korea’s strategy. They make South Korean to think that it is also a liar and make us not to prepare war. If South Korea is not ready for the war and provides loopholes to the North Korea, it will be easier for North Korea to attack South Korea.

  Let’s think about the war. When the war occurs, who will fight? Youth go out and fight with each other without any reason. Although they are very young and have other things that they have to do and can do, they should go to the war. If the war occurs. What a vain. But look. People who decide to start war are not the youth. Old people (or maybe young people also, but usually old people) make a decision and youth go. It is nonsense. Youth have a dream. Youth can make world more newly. But if the war happens, then hundreds of, thousands of dreams fly. I feel really sorry for it.

  What should we do? Let’s find the thing that we can do to prevent war.

  For me, MANNAM is the best way to show my opinion. As a member of MANNAM, I can shout the anti-war. I alone am very weak, but if I am in MANNAM, I will be a force to be reckoned with in the world. MANNAM now shouts about the peace, and of course it includes preventing war. I hope many people or organizations join the movement of MANNAM and empower MANNAM. Everyone wants peace. No one wants war. We can make it. We can do it all together.

66th National Liberation Day celebration

 

 

  In Korea, there are several national holidays; New Years day, Chuseok, the anniversary of the Independence Movement of March 1st etc. Among them, for me, the most important day is National Liberation Day of Korea!!! Why? Because that Day is my birthday :P (I'm very proud of it. Many people who are born in August 15th will agree with me haha) So, many of my friends couldn't forget my birthday. In one part, my birthday is really good because many people can remember and celebrate my birthday. However in another part, my birthday is not good because it is national holiday and I can't go school on that day. (It means I can't have happy birthday party in school ;( ) 

 

  So, today's topic is National Liberation Day of Korea!!! Especially the festival held by MANNAM celebrating 66th National Liberation Day. Below is the introduction of 66th National Liberation Day of MANNAM (from mannamintl.org )

 

   "Among many 66th National Liberation Day celebrations, a festival with the hope of world peace and remembering the true meaning of the restoration of light was held on Aug. 15th, 2011. The global festival was hosted by MANNAM Volunteer Association (hereafter MANNAM) inviting ambassadors of different countries, distinguished guests and foreigners to Yongsan War Memorial.
The 4th National Patriotic Citizen’s Festival expressed special love for its country and people as well as its special volunteer spirit. The event not only served to celebrate the independence of Korea and wishing for a quick reunification of the two Koreas, but also as a global festivity where the light of peace is shed on the war-filled world.

 

 

 

<66th National Liberation Day Celebration of MANNAM>

 Like the word “the restoration of light,” foreigners from all over the world participated in the event celebrating the returned light of Korea by singing the Korean national anthem. The event brought everyone at the scene together. Moreover, as the title of the event suggested “World Peace, Festival of the Victory of the Restoration of Light,” the event started with the commemorative ceremony of the National Liberation day. The day continued with various performances, cultural booths, Korean and other countries’ traditional booths and more.
During the closing ceremony, there was a laser show where a small beam of light enters and enlightens the entire world, expressing the true meaning of the restoration of light."

 

 

  Although I couldn't go this festival but I'm sure it must be really amazing. Why? Because It was held by MANNAM :D !

Today’s topic : volunteering

 

There are many ways to help other people. And we say those ways are volunteering.

What is volunteering? Volunteering comes from the word ‘volunteer’. There are two big meanings of volunteer. The first meaning of Volunteer is someone who does work without being paid for it, because they want to do it. Another meaning is someone who offers to do a particular task or job without being forced to do it. So, we can draw the meaning of the volunteering. The first meaning of volunteering is working without being paid for it because they want to do it. Second meaning is offering to do a particular task or job without being forced to do it. In conclusion, volunteering is doing something because they like it. Without being paid for money or being forced to do it.

 

Volunteering is not that difficult.

Just help others willingly.

Don’t be shy.

Just try to help others.

That would be the volunteering.
