4 postings about one topic, wow, it's really long! Isn’t it?
Today will be the last day of MIYC.

The last topic is the '10km in their shoes'!!!

What's the purpose of the 10km? Why MIYC prepare 10km?

Actually, this 10km event is not the first 10km event. Last April we also had 10km event in all branches. You can follow this YouTube and can watch the 10km of Gwangju MANNAM.

On that day, not only Gwangju but also other 12 branches had 10km events at the same time.

Then, why the 10km event was made and what is the aim of the 10km event?

 10km in their shoes was an awareness campaign. Holding the flags of the damaged countries (by war), people shouted the end of the war and world peace out. Through walking, participants were aware of the crises that the world faces now. The crises can be the war, climate change, disaster and dictatorship. (Especially this 10km event was made to oppose to the war.) It was a soundless movement toward the world. All participants walked wishing to show their strong supports to the anti-war movement and those who suffer from the ongoing war. 10km in their shoes was the starting point of MIYC. Through 10km event, MIYC began to act as a representative of many youth organizations working for world peace. It was a great step forward visible world peace.

 'Is it possible to achieve world peace just by walking 10km?' People may think like this. However, if you think about the history again then you can find that all the victories of freedom were made through the revolution. Long time ago, people had to bleed during the revolution, but now people don't need to bleed (ok, I admit nowadays also people sometimes (or often) bleed for the freedom). Thanks to the development of media thing, we can easily share our hopes and thoughts with the people who have the same thoughts with us. In this case, people can gather through Internet (or SNS') and can move together even though they are apart from each other. Nowadays, it is possible to go revolution without blood.

 10km event does not end as one day event. I don’t know the exact day but I heard that soon, 10km events will be held in all over the world. It started from one small country, Korea, but it will spread to the world. One candle can find another candle in the darkness. I think 10km event in Korea is the first lighted candle. And the light of the first candle spreads to the other ‘hidden’ candles. One light looks very small and people may be able to recognize it, but if the lights are put together, people can’t ignore it. It is the characteristic of the light. I think all the movements for world peace are like the candle.

 

It is the badge of MIYC.

We can get this badge after finishing the 10km (3km for us:P).

Last two posts were about my personal experience with MIYC 10 km. Today, I will post about the MIYC itself. What it is and what is the purpose of MIYC !

What is MIYC?

MIYC is the acronym of MANNAM International Youth Coalition. 

MIYC site says that
  "MIYC was formed from groups of young people coming together with the vision and determination to unite people across borders, cultures, languages and races. MIYC aims to foster a spirit of appreciation and respect for the diversity of humanity, as well as for all individuals that create that diversity."

What is the aim of MIYC?

 MIYC will organize some projects throughout the year and organizations that decided to join the movement of MIYC will engage in those projects. For those projects, there will be a youth summits and summit's aim is to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing us in the pursuit of peace. Nobody wants war/fight. Everybody wants peace. Then why the peace couldn't be obtained until now? Because we coulnd't bring our power together. MIYC's role is to combine people's power into one way. One by one, all youth organization will join the movement of MIYC and MIYC will become more powerful. Each of us is very small, but if we put together, we can be a big power.

In my humble opinion, MIYC is a very ideal coalition. MIYC is not just a group, it is a 'coalition'. You may know the clear meaning of coalition. A coalition is 'a group consisting of people from different political or social groups who are co-operating to achieve a particular aim. MIYC was made only to cooperate with each other aiming to world peace. That's all. Nobody can say that it is for specific one group. It can not be like that MIYC is just a good way to gather together in the name of world peace. I hope MIYC spread more further than now and through MIYC world peace would be made.

Today's topic: MIYC, Pledge of Peace, 10 km in their shoes (2)

 

  After finishing the 3km, We (Gwangju MANNAM) went to the zoo. The zoo is really big!

In the zoo, we did scavenger hunt! Each team has 2 big missions. First one is to find 5 things about the peace in the zoo. 1. fight/war 2. reconciliation 3. harmony 4. peace 5.... I can't remember!!!!!! Anyway, there are 5 things that we had to take picture of it. Second one is to bring 'Cloud'.  Our team was divided into 2 teams and my team's mission was to find fight/war, reconciliation and harmony. We didn't have much time so we only could go gorilla and chimpanzee area.... All we took is... gorilla and chimpanzee !!!!! 

 

Can you imagine what it means?

It is a 'peace'.

Why?

If you look carefully the monkey,
then you can see that the monkey carries her (or his!?!?!?) baby on her chest.

  You may think that how it can be the peace but it is peace. As I wrote in MIYC, 10km in their shoes, pledge of peace (1), peace is not that difficult concept. I think first thing that we have to do to achieve world peace is to make people think 'peace' in easy way. If people start to use 'peace' easily, then the burden of the 'world peace' will be less. Let's start one by one.

Today's topic: MIYC, Pledge of Peace, 10 km in their shoes (1)

 Last Sunday, I went to Seoul with Gwangju MANNAM members. For what? To participate in the big peace event named 'Pledge of Peace, 10km in their shoes'. This event was hosted by MIYC (MANNAM International Youth Coalition). Many youth groups who are wishing for 'peace' gathered together in Seoul Grand Park and had a meaningful time. Participants were supposed to walk 10 km, but because we are from Gwangju (it takes about 4 hours to go to Seoul from Gwangju ;<) we walked only 3 km. The weather was so good and cherry blossoms were in full bloom. It was really good to walk while thinking the world peace.

 In Seoul Grand Park, there were many many people (foreigners and Korean), and I was happy that it means many people are thinking about the peace. When I heard this event, I doubted that how many people are thinking about the world peace and come to the event? However it turned out that many people are thinking about the world peace and try to do something for the world peace. It made me really really happy.

 Many people think that 'peace' is difficult thing. The friends who went to Seoul with me also thought that 'peace' is a difficult concept. It is because they never thought about the peace before. Same with me, before joining MANNAM, I also thought that world peace is a good but vague thing. (Thanks MANNAM!) For me, I think that this event was really meaningful in making people think about the 'peace' in light concept.

  There are many sayings about the war. Today, I pick up the most impressive sayings for me.

  Actually, it is not pleasing to find famous sayings about the war because it means that there have been many wars. Many people want the peaceful world without war. However many people think that it is impossible to stop war. Many people have been talking about the horrors of war but they did nothing to stop the war. I understand that it is very difficult to do something for the anti-war because they think that it needs really big thing. But actually it is not. Anti-war movement is not that difficult. Just start doing twitter and face book. Join the club and tweets about your sincere mind about anti-war. That is the first step forward world peace. I started my first step by joining MANNAM. Second step is twitter and third step is face book. For me it is also difficult and a little bit awkward because I’ve never done this before. I tried to change myself.

Today's topic : Nuclear threats

  All around us, I mean, South Korea, many countries feel sorry for this situation concerning about North Korea. North Korea has been threatened South Korea with their nuclear weapon, and last Tuesday, they announced that they will restart their nuclear reactor which had shut 5 years ago. Many major broadcasters are broadcasting about the nuclear problem between South and North Korea. However, South Korean looks like they have no idea about that.

  Everyone around me (including me), doesn’t care about the war. They even look like they don’t realize the situation. (Actually, some of my friends didn’t know about the situation that we face.) People around me (of course including me) don’t think that it will happen. I think there are two reasons about that situation. First, it is because we know that the entire world will react severely if North Korea does any action about the war. People say that if the war happens in Korea, it will be a Third World War. If the South Korea represents the democracy, then the North Korea would represent the socialism. The world is separated into two big parts democracy and socialism. People worry about the possibility of World War Ⅲ. Because Korean doesn’t think that the World War Ⅲ will happen, so people don’t care about this situation.

  Second, it is because we are accustomed to it. We are used to it. I mean, it is not the first time that North Korea threatens the South Korea (the world). They attacked North Korea before whether big or small. So, people (South Korean) think that it is a part of that. However, some people are saying that it is the North Korea’s strategy. They make South Korean to think that it is also a liar and make us not to prepare war. If South Korea is not ready for the war and provides loopholes to the North Korea, it will be easier for North Korea to attack South Korea.

  Let’s think about the war. When the war occurs, who will fight? Youth go out and fight with each other without any reason. Although they are very young and have other things that they have to do and can do, they should go to the war. If the war occurs. What a vain. But look. People who decide to start war are not the youth. Old people (or maybe young people also, but usually old people) make a decision and youth go. It is nonsense. Youth have a dream. Youth can make world more newly. But if the war happens, then hundreds of, thousands of dreams fly. I feel really sorry for it.

  What should we do? Let’s find the thing that we can do to prevent war.

  For me, MANNAM is the best way to show my opinion. As a member of MANNAM, I can shout the anti-war. I alone am very weak, but if I am in MANNAM, I will be a force to be reckoned with in the world. MANNAM now shouts about the peace, and of course it includes preventing war. I hope many people or organizations join the movement of MANNAM and empower MANNAM. Everyone wants peace. No one wants war. We can make it. We can do it all together.

Cherry Blossom and Peace

Winter has gone and spring has come.

The weather is getting warmer and my mind is getting warmer too. :-P

  My university is famous for natural landscape. There are many trees, flowers and birds….(!?!). I really like it. Everywhere there are green and brown colors so I can rest my eyes. I can smell fresh air and I can hear birds chirping. How nice of it! Nowadays, it’s cherry blossom season. My university is popular place for cherry blossom. Yesterday, I met my friend in university and I could find many families. At every shadow, people set up and took rest. Kids were running and parents looked after them. The weather was so nice and I’ve come to think that “Ah~ this is the peace.” Peace is not big thing. Nice weather, nice cherry blossom, people’s smiling faces and green landscape… all of these small things makes me happy and peaceful.

  I talked with my friend about what is peace? He answered to me that preventing war is peace. I said to him that peace is bigger than that. Preventing war is one kind of peace. Many people think that peace is difficult conception. People feel awkward about the word ‘peace’. It makes me sad because it means that people are far from feeling peace. They don’t know what peace is and of course they must not experience the peace. Peace is not big thing. I emphasized it again and again to him. I think it will take some time for him to understand my words. I will try my best to make him understand it.

  Please take it easy. People who have so much works and have no time to think about anything else can’t feel peace. I recommend people to have some time for him or herself. If people have no time to take a rest, then people come to think that peace is not reality. The friend that I met yesterday is also busy person. He is busy doing his experiments. So he has no time to think about peace deeply. It is a little bit far from him (he thinks). I said it before that people who achieve small peace and try to achieve big peace. I hope many people think about small peace (his or her own inner side peace) and then, think about big peace.

Peace is not difficult.

Only small cherry blossom can make you peaceful.

Do you know the movie ‘Hotel Rwanda’?

  Few years ago, I couldn’t remember exact time, I took a class named ‘understanding of the English speaking world Literature and Culture’. It means, not about England or America but about the countries which are using English as a main language. Africa, the Caribbean, India, Oceania, Canada, Ireland can be the English speaking world. Among those countries, the first chapter was about Africa and I’ve got interest in that country. There are many novels and movies. My professor gave me a homework. That homework was to watch the movie ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and write a paper. By any chance, I’ve got to watch the ‘Hotel Rwanda’, and it was really touching.

 

  The story is about the civil war of Rwanda. There are two big tribes, Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda. Two tribes have been in bad relationship with each other and as the president is assassinated, the situation is getting worse. Hutu tries to kill every Tutsi even the baby. In that situation, Paul (the main character) tries to help and hide as many Tutsi people as possible. All the worlds turn their faces away from the Rwanda. UN also can’t help them. Only Paul, as the manager of a hotel, he hides many Tutsi people in his hotel.

He could save 1268 Tutsi people. However during this civil war, about 1 million people died.

 

  This movie was directed based on a true story like ‘Schindler’s List’. So it is more miserable. The Rwanda civil war was not that old history. In 1994, there was a war in Rwanda. After 10 years later, this was made into the movie. When I was 5 years old and lived happily with my family, in Rwanda, there were people suffer from terrible war.

 

  Why these things happen? Why the war is still going on? Why people suffer from the war?

  Everybody wants peace. People don’t want war, conflicts and fights. To make world peaceful, what can we do? To against the war like civil war of Rwanda, what can we do?

 

  We have to find a possible way. If we think peace is impossible and stop moving, then we would be stopped forever. The thoughts that it is not possible really make it impossible. The power of thinking is really strong. In the best seller book ‘Secret’, the author says to us that think and imagine deeply. It will affect other environment (kind of energy) and it will make it to work. If it is just a lie, the book could not be the best seller. Believe! and don’t stop there, Act! One action is more powerful than 100 thoughts. I’ve participated in MANNAM because it is the biggest and the most realistic action that I can take. In the MANNAM, I can dare dream the world peace.

Have a great time with lovely kids! 

 

I am a member of MANNAM Gwangju. MANNAM Gwangju goes to orphanage every last Saturday of a month. In orphanage, we prepare many programs which kids and foreign friends can enjoy together. Last month, we did some games using newspaper to raise our cooperation and made fortune bags for celebrating the New Year! (It was hard to make fortune bags but we enjoyed :P) I think it is a great opportunity for children to meet foreign teachers and experience multi cultural society. It is also a good opportunity for foreign friends to volunteer in Korea. I heard that they want to do some volunteering works but it is difficult to do by themselves. Of course they can just enjoy the life in Korea, but some of them want to do something worthy in Korea except drinking. (If they start volunteering for the first time in MANNAM, it is our honor!) We plan all programs together and do the programs all together. It is more worthier because we do everything together!

 

 

  Yesterday, (though it was not the last Saturday) we went to orphanage and had a great time. Yesterday’s program was planting! First we made our own pots. Kids and members decorated pots using various colors, stickers and materials. It was really funny. Soon, everyone’s face was colored with colors. After finishing decorating pots, we dried these pots outside. While, we had some croquettes made by Japanese team! It was really delicious and we ate them all in a twinkle. The pots were dried and we planted beautiful flower in the pot.

Can you guess why we prepare this program? Planting flowers? Kids are hopes for us. We can see our future through the kids. Like flower, kids would change if we care them and water them. The thing that we planted yesterday was not just flower; it was our hope for the future. We planted every flower wishing the peaceful future.

 

Whenever I went to orphanage I feel happy. The children really welcome us and I can feel their warm heart. Not only me but also many foreign friends like to go to orphanage. They feel that it is really worth doing. They like watching kids smiling. One of our member said to me that it is the most impressive volunteering works that I’ve done in MANNAM. I think it is because we can feel it directly. The world peace that I want to achieve is making all people happy. Regardless of race, religion and country, all people can be happy. If the peace is realized in this world, I believe lovely kids can live with their family happily. I hope that kind of world. How about you?

Today’s topic is the song of Sting “Fragile”.

 

Sting is a very famous musician and I think you already have heard about him.

I’ve got to know him through TV advertisement. Sting came Korea few years ago for Hyundai Card’s Super Concert. Of course I couldn’t go there but I heard his song ‘Englishman in New York’(It is the most popular one of his songs) many times through the TV advertisement. First, I was surprised by his good songs and second, I was surprised by his works. His original name is Gordon matthew Tohmas Sumner and he usually is known by his stage name Sting. He is an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and philanthropist. He has a many titles but one thing that catches my eyes is the ‘activist’. As an activist, he participated many movements to change the world. He dreams the peace without war so he participated many movements actively like human rights protection movement through AMNESTY or tropical rainforest protection movement. He also made some songs about war, society and peace. His song ‘Fragile’ is about the sadness of the war. And today I want to introduce this song to you. Through ‘Fragile’, he honored Americans killed meaninglessly by the war. Except for ‘Fragile’ he wrote many songs wishing peaceful world. I think the dream that he dreams is the dream that MANNAM dreams. Like Sting do the things that he can do (make songs, participate in movement), We MANNAM also do the things that we can do. We do volunteering works or hold some events wishing world peace. I hope through MANNAM or Sting, many people become aware of the world peace!

Do you know Nobel Peace Prize?

  Every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace. The Nobel Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank established The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award. (from www.nobelprize.org)

 

  The thing that I want to point out is Nobel Peace Prize. Actually Nobel is an inventor of dynamite and he earned a fortune by running corporation. What is dynamite? It is a bomb. Really effective bomb. Using the dynamite people invented nuclear weapon and using the nuclear weapon, people killed countless people. Don’t you think that it is a little bit strange? Some people say that because Nobel felt sorry for the invention of dynamite (because it became the murder weapon), he donated his all fortune and make the foundation. How can the inventor of dynamite can be the founder of the ‘Peace prize’? It is nonsense. It is funny to me.

 

  “The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: /- - -/ one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

  The first winners of the Nobel Peace Prize were Henry Dunant the founder of Red Cross and Frederic Passy, a leading international pacifist of the time. Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a person or organization that effort for the peace movement, and who work for human rights, mediation of international conflicts, and arms control. 5 people who are chosen by the Norwegian Storting (Parliament of Norway), Oslo, Norway will choose the awarder.

 

  I don’t know the intention of him (Nobel) to make Nobel Prize, but one thing that I have to admit is that people are to think about the peace one more time. For example, when the president Kim Dae-Jung awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2000, we Korean were to think about the meaning of the peace. I think it is really good. In anyway, making people think about peace is nice! Sadly, in Korea there is only one person (Kim Dae-Jung) who awarded Nobel Peace Prize. In my opinion, there are many people or organization in Korea who are entitled to get a Nobel Peace Prize. Like MANNAM! MANNAM can be a strong candidate of the Nobel Peace Prize although many people want to ignore MANNAM. Because light can’t be hidden, I believe that someday everybody will know about MANNAM and will want to join the MANNAM. And I will be a great person who makes people think about MANNAM in good way by blogging :P

 

  I hope many people have an interest in Nobel Peace Prize and think about the peace one more time. Every single thought come together and make the big thought like mosaic. Each unit may be looked like very small, but if the units gather together then they can be a big power! I hope MANNAM can be a medium for the big peace!
