Today’s topic: famous saying about war

  There are many sayings about the war. Today, I pick up the most impressive sayings for me.

  Actually, it is not pleasing to find famous sayings about the war because it means that there have been many wars. Many people want the peaceful world without war. However many people think that it is impossible to stop war. Many people have been talking about the horrors of war but they did nothing to stop the war. I understand that it is very difficult to do something for the anti-war because they think that it needs really big thing. But actually it is not. Anti-war movement is not that difficult. Just start doing twitter and face book. Join the club and tweets about your sincere mind about anti-war. That is the first step forward world peace. I started my first step by joining MANNAM. Second step is twitter and third step is face book. For me it is also difficult and a little bit awkward because I’ve never done this before. I tried to change myself.

  As the situation (in Korea) is gettting worse, people started to focus on the reaction of the UN.
Many people would know about the UN for several ways. Today, I want to talk about the head of the UN, Ban Ki-moon.


BAN KI MOON


  Ban Ki-moon is the 8th and current Secretary General of United Nations. He was born in a small farming village in South Korea, in June 1944. When he was in high school, he won essay contest sponsored by the Red Cross, and he’s got a chance to go to America and met U.S. President John F. Kennedy. That meeting made him to decide to become a diplomat. He entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1970 and become the foreign minister in 2004. And finally in 2006 he was elected as a 8th Secretary General of UN. His main works are in climate change, nuclear nonproliferation, 8 Millennium Development goals. He is not that active politic person like Kofi Annan. But he was evaluated that he dealt with sensitive issues well among strong countries. Naturally, he was reelected as a UN Secretary General.

(When I was young, my dream was to become the first Korean UN Secretary General. But when I was middle school student, he (Ban Ki-moon) became the first Korean UN Secretary General, and I had to give up my dream. ;’( )

Anyway, I’m very proud of him as a Korean. Of course there are some points that he is criticized at but in my opinion, he is doing very well. As the world becomes smaller, there are more and more complicated and sensitive problems among the countries. People need specific organization to deal with those problems and UN is made. The lists that UN has to deal with are really long these days. From the war prevention to nature disaster prevention, every world is connected with each other complicatedly and naturally the role of UN as an intermediary is getting bigger. UN is an international organization and many people followed the direction of UN.

The thing that I hope is that MANNAM becomes like the UN. Concerning about peace, I hope MANNAM becomes the most effective association because MANNAM is non political association. Purely, MANNAM acts for the world peace. It is not related any profit of specific country.

I hope many people are interested in world peace without any cost. The cost of world peace is world peace itself. Don’t you think soJ?

 I started twitter few days ago, and it was so difficult for me to do that. So... by mistake, i was suspended for 2 times. I begged twitter and I could get back my twitter. :'(
And because my twitter is connected to facebook, my friends can also see my tweet in facebook.

Is there anyone who can answer to this question clearly?

It is really easy to be friends.
But sometimes, and for some people, it maybe the most difficult thing to do.

In this song, 'Why' is repeated again and again.
We can not understand why the world is full of these terrible things and why we can't change this world and just accept it.

Keep in mind the word 'why'.
It makes you awake to this illogical situation.
First we have to wake our minds and then we can wake our bodies.
You alone will be difficult, but with MANNAM, it will be much easier.
Because MANNAM people are highly enlightened about the illogical situation or the world.
MANNAM is the world peace leading group of the world.  


If everybody comes to think about 'why',
then the world will be changed without doubt.

Do you know the movie ‘Hotel Rwanda’?

  Few years ago, I couldn’t remember exact time, I took a class named ‘understanding of the English speaking world Literature and Culture’. It means, not about England or America but about the countries which are using English as a main language. Africa, the Caribbean, India, Oceania, Canada, Ireland can be the English speaking world. Among those countries, the first chapter was about Africa and I’ve got interest in that country. There are many novels and movies. My professor gave me a homework. That homework was to watch the movie ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and write a paper. By any chance, I’ve got to watch the ‘Hotel Rwanda’, and it was really touching.
 
  The story is about the civil war of Rwanda. There are two big tribes, Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda. Two tribes have been in bad relationship with each other and as the president is assassinated, the situation is getting worse. Hutu tries to kill every Tutsi even the baby. In that situation, Paul (the main character) tries to help and hide as many Tutsi people as possible. All the worlds turn their faces away from the Rwanda. UN also can’t help them. Only Paul, as the manager of a hotel, he hides many Tutsi people in his hotel.
He could save 1268 Tutsi people. However during this civil war, about 1 million people died.
 
  This movie was directed based on a true story like ‘Schindler’s List’. So it is more miserable. The Rwanda civil war was not that old history. In 1994, there was a war in Rwanda. After 10 years later, this was made into the movie. When I was 5 years old and lived happily with my family, in Rwanda, there were people suffer from terrible war.
 
  Why these things happen? Why the war is still going on? Why people suffer from the war?
  Everybody wants peace. People don’t want war, conflicts and fights. To make world peaceful, what can we do? To against the war like civil war of Rwanda, what can we do?
 
  We have to find a possible way. If we think peace is impossible and stop moving, then we would be stopped forever. The thoughts that it is not possible really make it impossible. The power of thinking is really strong. In the best seller book ‘Secret’, the author says to us that think and imagine deeply. It will affect other environment (kind of energy) and it will make it to work. If it is just a lie, the book could not be the best seller. Believe! and don’t stop there, Act! One action is more powerful than 100 thoughts. I’ve participated in MANNAM because it is the biggest and the most realistic action that I can take. In the MANNAM, I can dare dream the world peace.

Today’s topic is the song of Sting “Fragile”.
 
Sting is a very famous musician and I think you already have heard about him.
I’ve got to know him through TV advertisement. Sting came Korea few years ago for Hyundai Card’s Super Concert. Of course I couldn’t go there but I heard his song ‘Englishman in New York’(It is the most popular one of his songs) many times through the TV advertisement. First, I was surprised by his good songs and second, I was surprised by his works. His original name is Gordon matthew Tohmas Sumner and he usually is known by his stage name Sting. He is an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and philanthropist. He has a many titles but one thing that catches my eyes is the ‘activist’. As an activist, he participated many movements to change the world. He dreams the peace without war so he participated many movements actively like human rights protection movement through AMNESTY or tropical rainforest protection movement. He also made some songs about war, society and peace. His song ‘Fragile’ is about the sadness of the war. And today I want to introduce this song to you. Through ‘Fragile’, he honored Americans killed meaninglessly by the war. Except for ‘Fragile’ he wrote many songs wishing peaceful world. I think the dream that he dreams is the dream that MANNAM dreams. Like Sting do the things that he can do (make songs, participate in movement), We MANNAM also do the things that we can do. We do volunteering works or hold some events wishing world peace. I hope through MANNAM or Sting, many people become aware of the world peace!

 Do you know (or remember) the song ‘Hand in Hand’, the official song of 88 Olympic in Seoul, South Korea?
 
88 Olympic is the first biggest international event held in Seoul. The motto was ‘Harmony and Progress’ and 160 nations and 8391 athletes participated. It opened at 17th September and ends at 2nd October. More than 27,000 volunteers volunteered and about 11,331 media came and broadcasted this Olympic.
 
Actually I was born in two years later from that year, so I didn’t see the 88 Olympic with my own eyes. But when I was young, I had a chance to watch the performance of KOREANA, the singer group who sang in 88 Olympic. It was amazing. Of course the picture quality was not good but I can feel the atmosphere. It is a beginning of the world peace. The title is ‘Hand in Hand’. You can imagine how it was through the title itself. Everybody, regardless of country, religion and race, holds hand in hand. How nice it is!

But,,, sadly, I couldn’t find the English version. Look at the lyric and listen to the music. It is enough for you to feel the atmosphere.
 
Same as ‘Imagine’, I really like this song ‘hand in hand’. It is really touching and sometimes I almost about to cry. I don’t know why but I think it moved me deeply. Maybe the day that I watched this video is the dooms day that makes me to want world peace. True peace.

I have a dream _ Martin Luther King. Jr
 
 When we think about the speech about peace, freedom, we naturally come to think "I have a dream" delivered by Martin Luther King. Jr. Although it is limited to the 'racism', if we look carefully and think deeply about this speech, we will soon notice that it is the another root of peace. You remember the principal of MANNAM that I posed for the first time. We are volunteering associations regardless of racism, religion, and nation. MANNAM has many branches all over the world. I think it is the providence for proving that MANNAM really hopes peace of world (not only Korea) and MANNAM has a power to achieve world peace.  You may read or listen this speech before, but I recommend you to read it one more time. If you read my all posts, you will feel more than before.

"I have a dream"
I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history
as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today,
signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope
to millions of Negro slaves
who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.
It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free.
One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled
by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.
One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty
in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished
in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.
And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check.
When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words
of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,
they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men,
would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of Happiness."
It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note,
insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.
Instead of honoring this sacred obligation,
America has given the Negro people a bad check,
a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."
But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.
We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds
in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us
upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
We have also come to this hallowed spot
to remind America of the fierce urgency of now.
This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off
or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.
Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.
Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation
to the sunlit path of racial justice.
Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice
to the solid rock of brotherhood.
Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment.
This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent
will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.
Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.
And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam
and will now be content will have a rude awakening,
if the nation returns to business as usual.
And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America
until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights.
The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation
until the bright day of justice emerges.
But there is something that I must say to my people,
who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice.
In the process of gaining our rightful place,
we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds.
Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom
by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.
We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.
Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community
must not lead us to a distrust of all white people.
For many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today,
have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny.
And they have come to realize
that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
We cannot walk alone.
And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.
We cannot turn back.
There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights,
"When will you be satisfied?"
We can never be satisfied
as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.
We can never be satisfied
as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel,
cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.
We cannot be satisfied
as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.
We can never be satisfied
as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood
and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "for white only."
We cannot be satisfied
as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote
and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.
No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied
until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here
out of great trials and tribulations.
Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells.
And some of you have come from areas
where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution
and staggered by the winds of police brutality.
You have been the veterans of creative suffering.
Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina,
go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana,
go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities,
knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair,
I say to you today, my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow,
I still have a dream.
It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up
and live out the true meaning of its creed,
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia,
the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners
will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi,
a state sweltering with the heat of injustice,
sweltering with the heat of oppression,
will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin
but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
 have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists,
with its governor having his lips dripping
with the words of "interposition" and "nullification",
one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls
will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls
as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted,
and every hill and mountain shall be made low,
the rough places will be made plain,
and the crooked places will be made straight,
and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together.
This is our hope,
and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.
With this faith,
we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.
With this faith,
we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation
into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together,
to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together,
knowing that we will be free one day.
And this will be the day, this will be the day when all of God's children
will be able to sing with new meaning.
My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.
And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.
Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.
Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.
Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. But not only that
Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.
From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring
from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city,
we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children,
black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics,
will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual
Free at last, Free at last.
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.

I choose a ‘Howl’s moving castle’ as a today’s topic. Why? Because I like the character ‘Howl’ very much. Just kidding. Don’t look at me like that. While I looking for the music CDs, I found the Howl’s Moving Castle CD and I decided to write about this movie. (I really like the OSTs and characters of this movie! I love Miyazaki Hayao :D)
All movies of Miyazaki Hayao have anti-war message. Howl’s moving castle is one of them. The story is about the girl ‘Sophie’ and the royal magician ‘Howl’. People may regard this movie as a simple love story but if we see deeply, we can find some messages of Miyazaki Hayao.
Every night, Howl goes somewhere and come back distressed and exhausted. Europe is worn out by the continuous war. Howl fights every night to stop the war. However, the war doesn’t seem to end. Every day he fights, but only the scar and sadness are left to him. Sophie tries to help him and finally heals him. Howl is the representative of war in this movie and Sophie is the representative of love, peace and healing. We can get to this conclusion. The pain and the scar of war can be cured by love and peace. You may think that it is too abstract, but it is the right answer. The earth is full of war weather it is big or small. Hates, fights, envy, jealousy are all around the world, all around us. How can we defeat those bad things of human? Some people say that these things are fundamental things of human so we have to think that it is natural thing and accept it. Nonsense. Ridiculous. People who say like that are haughty. Who in the world can accept it? Who in the world can love the hates, fights, envy, and jealousy? I’m sure that those people must not experience the scar. Only the people who are hurt can say about the real scar. People are born to be loved and to love. If not, if people are born to be hated and to hate others, why people are exist? Why people have to maintain their painful life? No need to say about that.
 
Everyone has a right to live. Everyone has a right to live peacefully. Everyone has a right to being human. Everyone has a fundamental dignity.
Don’t give up making peaceful world. Don’t give up chasing beautiful life full of love.
I am sometimes about to cry because many people (including my family and my friends) suffered from countless reasons. I hope that one day all people come together and dream together. I really hope.
 
I mentioned that some people may think that it is just a dream. But I found that the realistic way to achieve the world peace. MANNAM. I believe that one day people all together and dream together in the name of MANNAM. MANNAM is not just an organization. It is the hope of mankind. Don’t look MANNAM as a dreamer. Who doesn’t dream can never fulfill the dream. I will dream with MANNAM.

'Les Miserable' and the 'Barricade'.

"Will you join in our crusade, Who will be strong and stand with me.
Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see.
Do you hear the people sing, Say do you hear the distant drums.
It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes."
 
It is the Epilogue of the movie 'Les Miserables'. In the last scene of movie, people gather together, make a barricade which is very long and strong and sing a song of hope.
 
I watched this movie with my mother and my sister. It is a 3 hours long movie (really long, but I totally lost my track of time. After the movie was end then I realized that about 3hours were passed.). It was so interesting that I recommended it to all of my friends. But some of them said it’s too boring. One of my friend said, “Inwoo! The movie was good but all dialogue were songs so it is a little bit awkward!”. But,,, I like it!!!!!!!
 
Anyway,
I choose Les Miserables as a today’s topic, because I found the people’s eagerness for peace in this movie. (By now, you may find out that I only post about the ‘peace’:P) As you can see in the lyrics above, French made a barricade to protest government. But it was just an imagination, people didn’t come up to make a barricade because they were afraid of government. Barricade is a symbol. Symbol, which signifies desire of people who want to be free from everything.
 
Everybody wants to be free. Everybody wants to live without oppression. Everybody wants to live in peace. Young men fought with army to keep their peaceful life. They just want some bread to eat, house to live in, and freedom to enjoy. Peace is not that big thing. Peace can be anything that makes your mind peaceful.
 
Who wants world peace? Those who are in trouble. (small or big, mentally or physically)
Why people want world peace? To live peacefully, without any oppression.
How can I make world peace? Through MANNAM.’s steps. :P
